The explosion safety audit is an indispensable stage of the risk reduction process in Ex-zones.

The explosion risk assessment is the most important constituent of the Explosion Protection Document required by the ATEX Directive 1999/92/EC (the “User” Directive). The assessment is performed through hazard identification, risk estimation and evaluation of the existing safety measures. The resulting non-conformities are then followed by a proposal of measures to reduce or eliminate the hazards.

The Explosion Protection Document contains the following:

• a list of classified Ex-zones;
• specification and assessment of explosion risk in external rooms and areas (Ex-zones);
• graphic classification of Ex-zones;
• recommendations and proposed remedies to reduce the explosion risk.

The explosion risk reduction requires prompt and decisive actions.

If the risk assessment proves the risk level to be unacceptably high, this means that the explosion hazard is serious. Risk reduction covers the following measures:

• prevention of explosive atmosphere formation and wherever impossible due to the nature of specific actions;
• avoiding sources of ignition in explosive atmospheres;
• reducing the damaging effect of explosion;
• using organizational measures, warnings and information.

Functional safety ensures the relevant reliability of control systems in Ex-zones.

Functional safety covers issues related to the reliability of control systems of equipment and safety systems. We will analyze whether the individual control systems are functioning correctly, e.g.:

• temperature measurement systems which protect against exceeding critical values;
• spontaneous ignition temperature control for explosive mixtures;
• control system of the safety systems;
• applications related to the use of flammable gas or vapor concentration meters.
